The Need To Recycle Computer Monitors
With the constantly changing computer technology individuals and companies everywhere are finding themselves with obsolete computer systems. In the year 2002 the United States alone estimated there where over 21 million obsolete computer systems sitting around. That number is expected to grow to 500 million by the end of 2007.
Many people are reluctant to dispose of their obsolete computer systems because they fear they may need a back up system someday. This results in millions of computer systems sitting in closets, warehouses, and attics. Only a small number of these computer systems are being recycled. Many others are finding their way to landfills or disposal incinerators.
Many people don't know that they can actually recycle computer monitors and other computer components. Throwing old computer monitors into landfills is rapidly causing an environmental hazard. Many of the older models have cathode ray tubes inside the monitor. These tubes have been known to be harmful to the environment, especially when crushed. Not all computer components can be recycled but some can. Recycling just makes good sense because it helps keep our environment clean and preserves our available resources.
No only is dumping computer monitors an environmental hazard, in some places it is against the law to dispose of them improperly. You or your organization could face severe fines if you are caught improperly disposing of certain computer monitors. Computer monitors that contain cathode ray tubes are the most harmful because they also contain large amounts of lead. It is illegal to dispose of lead at landfills because of the toxic affects it has on human and animal health. When you give your outdated computer monitor to a computer recycling company that will recycle computer monitors you are helping the world save many precious materials. These companies are trained to know what computer components they can recycle and which ones they cannot. CRT computer monitors are currently being phased out and are being replaced by LCD monitors which are more efficient and not as harmful to the environment. Even though CRT monitors are cheaper and offer equal picture quality, their affect on health and environment is of great concern. One way to recycle computer monitors is to donate the old computer monitor to local schools or agencies which can put the monitors to use. Many of these agencies can use the monitors to help teach under privileged children how to use computers or to increase their computer skills. If you donate your old monitor to an accredited charity you will probably be able to deduct the value of the monitor off your income taxes at the end of the year. Many of these charitable organizations will gladly come and pick up the old monitor for you. This will save you a trip to the disposal and could also save you disposal fees. If you must take your old monitor to a dumping station you should be prepared to pay disposal fees which could range from $3.00 to $35.00. In addition to these fees, if you call a company to pick up the old monitor you may also have to pay transportation fees. If you only have one or two to dispose of you might want to take them to the dumping station yourself. Computer monitor recycling is essential for the protection of Mother Earth.
